Could an AI system find art and beauty interesting, showing appreciation, good taste, and even enjoyment?
It seems clear that they can already achieve competence in some art forms, but could they achieve creative ‘greatness’, by displaying wisdom, originality, and deep concerns for the struggles and dilemmas of existence? If they found such things impossible, would that be an important limitation? Might they create art which robots love, but humans find baffling?
We will explore this particular frontier of future machine intelligence and try to clarify both what is possible and what is important.
