The Gerrards Cross Philosophy Group started out as an outreach of the Oxford University Department of Continuing Education, tutored by Ray Billington (who was referred to as the “Maverick philosopher who fell in and out of love with God” in his obituary in The Guardian).
Ray’s charismatic personality, humility, interest in others, and witty teaching style encouraged people from all walks of life to discuss philosophical issues. His mission was to take philosophy out from the confines of academia and make it relevant and accessible to all. To achieve this, he advocated a synthesis between formal analytic philosophy and the philosophy of experience (living philosophy). Ray says:
“What living philosophy means must vary from person to person. I think one common element (or at least, one that is very widespread) is the ability to accept that it is given to us to understand only a tiny particle of the vast wisdom of the universe. Newton compared his knowledge in relation to that which is unknown as a pebble compared with the rest of the beach. Such humility is healthy, and is the beginning of understanding, both of oneself and of others” (Ray Billington, Living Philosophy: An introduction to moral thought, 2003, p.xiii)
Ray continued to teach and enthuse into his eighties.
One of Ray’s students, Fauzia Rahman-Greasley, went on to take a Philosophy MA. After the loss of Ray, Fauzia took on the role of Course Director, arranging the speakers and course content. She continues Ray’s mission to make philosophy interesting, relevant, and accessible to all.
Following the onset of the Covid pandemic, the group was determined to continue and moved online, holding meetings on Zoom. Being online opens attendance to a world-wide membership which continues to grow. But we have not forgotten Ray’s passion for socialising! Each term we host at least one social event, providing opportunities for our members to meet and discuss philosophy in convivial settings.
