Born 15 December 1943, attended Friends School Lisburn, Campbell College Belfast, and Corpus Christi College Oxford.
Studied mathematics at Oxford 1962-65, then a B.Phil. in philosophy 1965-68, including a year as ‘Lecturer’ (temporary tutor) at Merton College, Oxford. Lecturer in Logic and Metaphysics (then promoted to Reader) at the University of St.Andrews, 1968 to 2000; served three years as Chairman of Department. Since early retirement, Honorary Reader at St.Andrews.
Played bassoon, painted landscapes, and conducted music ensembles.
Member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).
