In January 2022 I was sitting at an informal management and faculty meeting and was shocked because some of the participants stated that we would not be able to use essays as a form of assessment anymore because students all have access to generative AI tools such as ChatGPT.
This did not sound right to me, so I set out to reflect on how to define guidelines for the ethical use of these tools. Since then, I taught three courses in Oxford to young and relatively inexperienced MSc students, and an MSc course for experienced bankers and Fintech entrepreneurs in Vietnam. On all of them I assessed the students based on essays and I told them that it was COMPULSORY to use ChatGPT. I asked them to reflect and propose guidelines on how the use of these tools should be disclosed to the reader. A hundred and twenty-one students were involved in this initiative.
My talk will centre on the outcome of this experience. I hope it will prompt a discussion around the ethical use of these tools, their effect on authorship and intellectual property, and generate ideas to advance the standards.
