Laws of Nature and the existence of God

Presented by: Prof. P.D.R. Griffiths

In this interactive session which will be run in the style of a ‘knowledge café’, we shall reflect on a small number of the laws of nature such as:

  • Newton’s laws of movement
  • Einsteins general relativity
  • Photosynthesis
  • The 2ndLaw of Thermodynamics
  • Syntropy – does it really exist?
  • Evolution and Symbiosis

We will ask ourselves whether these are discoveries about reality or useful human constructs. The speaker will make the case for the former by contrasting them with the characteristics of laws of social sciences.

Can all these marvellous laws just have happened? Happenstance happens once. Coincidences? So many? Or are they revealing the existence of an architecture?

Furthermore, can anything come from nothing? If these laws came from nothing, would they not be challenging the laws of nature that we are analysing? So, if there is an architecture, what is the architect? Spinoza may give us some insights but also cause some problems.
