The twentieth-century British philosopher John Macmurray was an original thinker who brought rigour to the consideration of people’s emotions as well as their intellect. Feeling, as well as thinking, could be childish or mature, rational or irrational, he argued. Honesty of feeling was as essential as honesty of thinking. Nearly a century after he first wrote, his analysis is still relevant and helps philosophy to understand the whole person, who thinks, feels and acts.
