The History of Necessity

Presented by: Peter Gibson

For philosophers one way to mark the limits of reality is to identify what is necessarily true, and what is impossible. This is the subject matter of the Philosophy of Modality. We will track thoughts on the topic from earliest times, and the philosophical influence of the main theories.

The debate becomes more complex but also clearer when modern logicians addressed the topic. A major division in modern thinking emerges, and the talk will look at its implications.
