Returning to the beginning: Justice

Presented by: Fauzia Rahman-Greasley
  • “There is a two-way movement in philosophy, a movement towards the building of elaborate theories, and a move back again towards the consideration of simple and obvious facts.” (Iris Murdoch, The Sovereignty of Good)In this talk, I shall attempt a retracing of steps to see how a certain position has been reached on a central concept in ethics, law, and politics, namely that of Justice. The position is one which seems to me unsatisfactory because it ignores certain facts whilst simultaneously imposing a single theory which fails to consider rival theories. My hope is that by employing Murdoch’s two-way method, and accounting for previously theorized-away facts in the light of recent discoveries, the concept of Justice and its relation to Truth is clarified.
